~PART 31~

Haan tere saaya toh mai hu, par mai tujhe na paa saku
Haan iss safar me toh mai hu, par sang tere na reh saku
Mai hu shab tu subah, dono jud ke juda
Mai hu lab tu dua, dono jud ke juda

-Madno (Lamhe)

He sank on his knees and started to laugh hysterically and that really scared her. Seeing him like that, the worry that had disappeared behind the momentary anger resurfaced. Settling before him she cupped his cheek. *Mujhe maaf kar dijiye, maine gusse me-* He thrust her away and she fell on her hips, back hitting the bed although her mind didn’t register the sting because right now everything in her was focused on just him.

Tears trickled down her cheeks and so did his.

Don’t touch me. Mujhse dur raho. Mai iss layak nahi ke tum mere paas aao. His red eyes were hauntingly determined. You think I am lying. Lying… He laughed this time sadly. I wish. Par aisa hai nai, Geet. Wo mai tha. Maine hi tumhari izzat luti thi. Yeh ghinauna jhuth nai sach hai. I was that bloody bastard. Tumhara laal dubbatta maine feka tha. Tumhe mai ghaseet ke le gaya tha. Maine tumhara muh band kia, maine- maine hi wo sab kia. Mai tumhe sab bataoga, tumhe yakeen dilaoga ke wo mai tha… wo mai tha.

I did it. I did it for revenge. I thought I was doing it for my sister, my twin. My Maanvi. She was everything to me, a part of my soul; we’d always been together since our very first breaths. We were inseparable and each other’s support. We had a strange connection because we always knew when something was wrong with the other one.

I was studying in a college in Bangalore when one day I came to know that she was getting married. It was to be done once her college got over. I was heartbroken because she was going to leave me forever. But she was happy and I was happy for her. One of these days she had gone for some camping trip with her friends. I had this sick feeling brewing up inside of me but I couldn’t get through to her. Maa told me to not worry as they had gone to some small town and there might be network problem. When I was able to get through to her she sounded so weird, not like my sister and it scared the hell out of me. But she wouldn’t tell me anything regardless of how many times I probed. After few nights she called me and couldn’t stop crying. Fifth of march, can never forget the date. She told me everything that night.

They were camping on the outskirts of Hosiyaarpur because her friend knew the area well and had a farm house there. A guy, Brij, had misbehaved with her at a local fair. She had slapped him in front of everyone. She told me that she didn’t know he was that dangerous. He kidnapped and raped her the same night and let her go in the morning. She didn’t tell anything to anyone because she was scared and she didn’t want Dad to know. Although, the same day she called me she came to know that she was pregnant.

Gosh I had never heard her so forlorn. I told her I will make it alright, that I will take a flight immediately, come back n take care of everything. Yet she wouldn’t stop crying and kept telling me how Dad was going to be ashamed n depressed, he had already taken loan for our studies because his business wasn’t doing that well and with this… he won’t be able to take the humiliation. How Brij’s family was really powerful because his Dad was sarpanch n we won’t be able to get to him and how her marriage that was going to be held the next year won’t happen anymore. How the scars she had on her body and soul will never be erased. She didn’t want to be a mother neither she wanted to kill. I tried to assure her like she had done to me when I had gotten into bad company-in her absence because she was doing her intermediate in another city-and became an alcoholic. She had stopped Dad from throwing me out of the house and supported me in coming out of it. Yet this was much more as compared to my problem n the anger that surfaced within me at that made my head spin. I swore to her that I will make whoever had done that to her pay in worst manner but not a word she was ready to believe. In the end she told that she loved me the most in the world and hung up.

I was scared n worried but I had not known that it was really the end. Maan wiped his tears. He had never recalled that memory when his sister had died. He had not seen her dead body; just a gaping hole in his heart was the proof that she was no more there. She had left taking a part of him, his happiness, his peace, his sanity, everything with her. It was just so tough to think of her as dead. But now that he had finally come to it he owed Geet every bit of the truth. By the time I came back the next day, she was dead.

I didn’t see her face. I couldn’t. I ran away from there. Took Dad’s car and set off to Hoshiyarpur. I broke the vow to Maanvi of never drinking. When I reached your village, I found out about Brij as much as I could and waited… for 2 days, drinking myself into a state of near stupor and looking out for the right opportunity. And it came finally. I followed you to the farm and attacked when I knew no one was around. I was avenging the one I loved and causing Brij the same pain and shame he had caused me and my sister. Only you were the wrong sister. I didn’t know it then.

I came back home and as the haze of alcohol started to fade, remorse started to set in, and realization. Nothing had changed. I was still paining and Maanvi was still dead. Maanvi hadn’t done anything just slapped that bastard for his own doing and what he did to her? He did what I had done to you. And it ate me alive. I had failed my sister in every way n I knew if she was there she would hate me. I was not the person that I had become. I had gone the wrong way once but I wasn’t that bad. I was not a criminal, not someone who could ruin a girl and leave her to suffer forever. I tried to suppress it all inside me for a year. Dad’s health had gone bad since Maanvi’s death and after his death a year later I broke down completely before Dadimaa and told her everything.

She was shaken up and agonized more by my admission then she was with Maanvi and Dad’s death, it was just too much for her to take one thing after the other. She had a terrible heart seizure. In the hospital she demanded that I go and take punishment for what I had done.

It just gave me hope. Hope that I’ll be saved now. That once I have accepted my deed that girl would be saved. I will be punished and that only will be my salvation. For first time in months I was close to what one could call happiness. However my hopes were crushed when I reached Hoshiyaarpur. I came to know that Sarpanch’s daughter was getting married. I thought that she n her family had moved pass the horrible thing I had done and perhaps nobody else knew about it except for her family. If I did go to her or the police it would be bringing her back into the horrendous past. Ironically even Brij had been punished. He had been killed in a car accident just two weeks following the death of Maanvi. I didn’t know if to be happy or cry at my luck. I came back; nothing left of myself… no hope, no escape. No amount of self talk would erase the guilt of my deeds. Maanvi’s last words would repeat in my ears again n again reminding me of how I couldn’t protect my sister n failed her in every way even after her death. I woke up at nights having all kinds of nightmares, of Maanvi crying n leaving me, of hurting an unknown face. Loud whimpers and screams haunted me through days n months.

Maanvi always had this dream that I take up Dad’s business to great heights and make our father proud. I had nothing left apart from this little craziness to at least fulfill my sister’s this one wish. It wouldn’t make me anything just give me something to occupy my mind which was full of gory sins, regrets and cutting emptiness. So I made it my life’s goal.

He closed his eyes, trying to breathe n speak through his parched throat. His words were hoarse n low yet he needed to complete what he had started.

When I stepped into Hoshiyaarpur again unwillingly because of that power plant I hadn’t expected to meet you. I didn’t recognize you when I saw you in front of my car, but weirdly it felt that I knew you. And, I was attracted at the very first sight which was strange because I couldn’t look at a girl with any kind of physical interest. All I felt was disgust with myself. When I saved you from your Taayiji, I recognized him and dread filled me. After taking you to the haveli and being told that you couldn’t speak because of something that had happened four years ago, I enquired the caretaker about it all. That was when I came to know the girl I raped wasn’t Raaji, it was you. Funny thing I somehow knew it all along since I saw your face in rain illuminated by the headlights even though I had not seen your face while corrupting you.

When everyone was coming to take you I had to save you anyhow, take you away from that hell where you were tortured because of me. So I married you without any glance at the future. And I fell for you. It happened too fast just when you brother and others had swords out, pointed at my neck. You came out without a care for yourself, despite my instructions and wouldn’t go back in until the swords were down n I was out of danger. That act left me aching and… I couldn’t stop myself. It was fate’s payback. I now know why I had to feel for you. I had to burn in hell knowing that I had wronged the girl I loved.

What happened in the bathroom that first morning in KM shook me hard. I thought and thought, realizing I was cheating you, misleading you. I was appalled with myself and my feelings and desires for you. Still, I had to keep you close to make sure that you were alright, to save you from any other harm. I decided that I would keep everything to myself until you got totally independent no matter how hard it was for me. Hiding truth wasn’t as hard as staying away from you was. I tried every tactic, from scaring you to making you cry. I distanced myself, stayed out still in end found you deeper in me to an extent that I started to fear you leaving me and never wanted the day to arrive when I had to tell you the truth and see you hate me. But believe me Geet that nowhere meant that I didn’t know that day wouldn’t come. It is here now.

He finally looked up and the sight of her made him wince. She sat completely still, her eyes wide and glossy, all color washed from her face- she appeared stoned. If it’s of any solace, I have died every second. I regret being alive. I won’t say sorry or ask for forgiveness because my crime is unforgivable. I just didn’t rape you, I took away your voice… impaired you perhaps for entire life. Whatever punishment you have for me I’ll take. I am ready to give up my life if you want me. His head hung low while he waited for her to shout at him, to slap him, beat him…. hate him. But nothing came. He glanced up again n she wasn’t there. Worriedly he stood on shaky legs, quickly wore his discarded clothes and came out to search for her. She wasn’t in the corridor. He took the elevator to go down. Did a girl just go from here? He asked at the reception of the hotel.

Yes, sir. She didn’t look fine and went out just moments ago.

Geet hadn’t gone far. She was wearing just the robe. He called her name to no response n she kept slipping away further. Maan knew he was having a nightmare only this one was as real as it could get and his eyes were open. He ran to her n held her hand pulling her back. Where are you going? You don’t know anything here. Hum kal ghar jayenge subah hi… wahan- wahan you can leave. To his astonishment she didn’t protest even a bit as he pulled her back with him towards the hotel.

Inside their suite she silently walked into her room and shut the door.

They reached KM the next afternoon. Dadimaa was surprised to see Geet all of a sudden in her room with bag. Aap toh kal aane wali thi na?Dadimaa asked teasingly.

*Thodi deer ho gai, par ab koi deeri nai hogi.* Geet said. Dadimaa noticed her flat voice and blank eyes. Kya hua beta? Maan ne aapko kuch kaha? Aap bags leke sidhe yaha kyu aa gai pehle thoda araam karke unpack kar leti. Aap bahut thaki hui lag rai hai.

*Mai jaa rai hu Dadimaa yeh ghar chodke.* Dadimaa instantly knew the reason behind Geet’s words but she had to make sure. Aap yeh kya keh rai hai?

*Wahi jo aapko samjh aa raha hai. Aapne mere saath aisa kyu kia Dadimaa?* She signed, needing to know. *Maine jin logo pe sabse zayada bharosa kia unn logo ne mere saath itna bada dhoka kia. Aapki aatma ne kabhi aapko nai kaha k mujhe sach bataye. Aap mujhe beti kehti thi na phir bhi aapne mere bare ek baar bhi nai socha, ek baar bhi nai socha ke yeh ladki jo ek jhuti duniya me reh rai hai usse sach bata de. At least I deserved that, didn’t I?*

Bata k kya hasil hota beta? Aap jab iss ghar aai thi toh nayi dulhan ki tarah na jaane kitne sapne leke aayi thi. Hum agar aapko sach bata dete toh kuch badalta nai bas aapka dil tootta. Aur hum jaante the ke Maan aapko chot nai pahuchayenge. What he did years ago was a mistake n I have seen him killing himself for it. And I also saw his feelings develop for you. Jo ho chuka hai wo beeta hua kal hai hum uske wajah se aapke aaj ko barbad nahi karna chahte the. Humne socha-

*Kya socha aapne? Let Geet live a life of lie, let her dream. That I would live happily with my own rapist who didn’t even had the guts to tell me the truth. Mera dil tootta? Aur aaj kya hua Dadimaa? Aaj kya hua? Sach saamne aa gaye aur aapko kabhi pata nai chalega kitna dard hua mujhe jab- Maine unhe aapna sab kuch mana. Chee, mujhe sochke bhi sharm aati hai. Maan was never that man that I always thought him to be. All this time he kept me with him to satisfy his guilt. And you supported him. You cheated me.*

Nai aisa nai hai. Dadimaa said crying but Geet’s own ache was so colossal she couldn’t see anything else. Inside her something had broken. She had always held on to that little strength, a voice that told her to always be happy. No matter how hard the times may be she had lived through them. Not today… Today all her past agony seemed so small. Like the real definition of pain she had just came to know… pain n betrayal. Nothing in world could make it go, ever. How she will live with it she had no idea.

Her chin quivered and voice shook. *Aisa hi hai, Dadimaa. Isilie mai jaa rai hu. Mera iss duniya me waise bhi koi nai hai aur jisse apna mana usne tod dia mujhe. I am indebted to your grandson. Aaj tak mujhe Maan ne jo dia maine khushi k sath lia yeh sochke k usme kahi na kahi mere pati ka pyar chupa hai. But he was just paying me, buying me and I can’t take it anymore. Wo admi kabhi mera pati ho hi nai sakta aur mai ek-ek paisa chukka dungi.*

Geet, please aap humari baat suniye-

Whatever was there to listen she had already heard. Ready to leave she’d almost had the bag in her hand when the strangled cry of Dadimaa made her stop. Everything forgotten she ran towards her. Geet aap… Dadimaa clutched her heart, sweat breaking out on her forehead. Maan ko ek mauka… please… Leaving Dadimaa just for few seconds she brought the servants n Divya and messaged Maan that they were going to the hospital.

BEZUBA, PART 30

~BEZUBA~

~PART 30~

Geet woke up early in the morning and stretched. Her eyes came down to rest on her hubby who now was sleeping peacefully. She kissed his forehead and tucked the sheets around him. If she could she would keep staring at him all day long.

When Maan’s eyes opened, Geet was the first thing that came into his mind and he searched for her. He stood up to go look where she was but then sagged back on the bed. How would he explain last night? What he would tell when she would question him about the demons of his past?
Geet came out of the bathroom, almost glowing, and he more than noticed that she was just in a robe. *Good morning.* She signed and opened the bun behind her head. Wet locks fell down and she towel dried them making beads of water spray all over including his face. This was best face wash he would ever get after waking up, he thought as he gaped at her openly. Her face flushed red when she found him ogling; his gaze tickled her almost physically. *Maine breakfast order kar dia hai, aap jaldi se naha lijiye.* She said and he walked towards bathroom. Maan? He turned around. Like a whirlwind she came pecked his cheek and flew away with a big naughty grin.
Inside the bathroom, her night dress lay on the counter. She had just taken bath in this same bathroom. He couldn’t help himself imagining her naked body in the shower, those long hairs stuck to her skin and her curves drenched in water.
Maan touched his cheek looking in the mirror and a smiled played on his lips. He felt wonderful despite what had happened last night. It felt like a little load was off his shoulder and she didn’t even question him about anything. Maybe if he told her- no, she would hate him. Someday she will hate you Maan no matter what. You are just stalling. You had promised to tell her when the right time came. Yes, he had. But then he didn’t know that the right time would come so soon and telling her would be so tough. She might forgive you. At that thought he chuckled. Who was he kidding? A girl could never forgive a person who did what he had done. And how would he forgive himself?
Then you should not tell her. She doesn’t need to know. God, that felt so selfish his gut clenched for just thinking. It would be impossible living with the guilt and burden all his life. Every time she stared into his eyes he would realize that he was betraying her. It was already unbearable n if he let his desire for her to rule his conscience he would suffer a hell lot more and she wouldn’t be happy too living with a skeleton.
Maan silently ate while Geet signed constantly telling him anything and everything about her college and friends and whatever came in her mind. It relaxed his nerves and with a raw ache in heart, he realized he would miss it, miss her. *When are leaving?*
We’ll be leaving tomorrow. I have a little work at the site today. I hope you have no problem?
*Nai. Mujhe kya problem hogi?* She shrugged and then stared at him with big-big eyes.
What?
*Aap kitne baje aayenge?*
Not sure. Kyu?
*Agar aapka kaam jaldi khatam ho jaye toh hum kahi ghumne jaa sakte hai, haina?*
Her idea was so damn good to pass that he instantly said. Do you want to go play golf?
*Golf? Aapko khelna aata hai?*
Of course. He said proudly.
*Okay.* Geet grinned too happy that they were going out.
I’ll be back around 1 and if the weather is good, we’ll go.
She nodded her agreement.
*Mai bahut thak gai hu.* Geet signed flopping on the couch. Maan did the same. Me too.
*It was so fun. Aapko toh bilkul khelna nai aata.* She laughed.
Their day was fab. After getting changed into the golf uniform in the changing rooms, they had come outside to the open fields to play. The weather was nice with perfect amount of sunlight shinning over them and a slight wind blowing. What wasn’t perfect were Maan’s playing skills. And every time he missed a hole Geet didn’t miss the chance to mock him. He played fine, his ball went in right direction, just never went inside the hole. It was nothing like the way he said ‘of course’ so smugly when she had asked him if he could play.
Maan sulked. It just wasn’t my day.
She looked at him with a funny expression.
It was your fault? He said and Geet raised a brow. You were distracting me and the stunt that you pulled… He trailed off glaring at her and sulking, altogether.
That made her grimace. When he was playing she had decided to trouble him a little. Running far off she had hid behind a tree. But it had been a bad idea because he had gone mad. Searching her all around like she would never come back. She had actually gotten scared seeing his expressions and come out. Maan had instantly taken her in a bone crushing hug and gave her a good scolding that still rang in her ears.
*I was joking.*
Don’t do that again.
*I won’t.* She combed the hairs back that had fallen over his forehead and Maan sighed, leaning into her touch. His eyes stared at her with so many hidden emotions. He was ecstatic; his stomach flipped each time he thought back to how awesome his day had gone, from the game to their late afternoon lunch in the restaurant of the golf course and ice cream after that. It had started to rain when they were driving back ending their day out on just the right note.
*Why can’t you always be like this?* Geet asked inwardly.
His phone rang and Maan went to balcony while taking the call. *Now the phone call will go on for minimum half n hour.* She had banned his phone in the golf course so now he would talk to his heart’s content. *Babaji inki shadi na phone se hi honi chahiye thi.* She cribbed.
Coming into her bedroom, Geet took out the lingerie. *Hum yaha ek din aur ruke hai. Yeh kya koi sign hai, babaji?* She looked down at the cloth in her hand and strangely didn’t feel that scared. It was just Maan, her Maan. She was his then why was she afraid. *Wo bhi toh kapde utarenge na, mai akele thode hongi. Waise bhi unhe kapde utarne ka bahut shauk hai.* She hit her head blushing at the idiotic thoughts.
The giddy feeling wouldn’t leave her stomach as she changed then checked herself in the mirror. Oh god, oh god. She closed her eyes with her hands and didn’t dare peek again. It was too small, her breasts were spilling out and whole of her legs were bare, the sides of her waist were bare too and whatever was covered was covered by a sheer, net fabric ready to give away. She couldn’t do it. *Nai Geet tu kar sakti hai. Zayada se zayada kya hoga wo pet pakad k hasne lagenge. Tu unki hasi se khush ho jana.* With that she wrapped the robe around herself n fastened the knot.
*Kiska call tha?* She asked coming out of the room and Maan wondered if she had taken bath again as she was again in a robe.
Dia… some official matter was there. Tumhe bhuk lagi hai? Geet nodded. Okay, tum dinner order karo. I will set the plates in balcony, we’ll eat there.
She did as told but with a million butterflies in her stomach how would she eat. The weather was so cool and she understood why Maan had wanted to eat out here in the balcony. Still, she couldn’t eat. Tum kha kyu nai rai?She smiled faintly n shook her head. *Mai kha toh rai hu.* Accha? To show she started to eat but mostly played with her food. After getting done, he helped her in cleaning the table and later came back out in the huge balcony to lounge. She settled in the empty seat beside him, he was deep in thought thinking don’t know what. She wanted his attention on her.
Maan…
Hmm. He said not looking at her and staring blankly at the sky.
She stood up n came in front of him. *I have to show you something.*Wha- She dropped the robe cutting him off. His eyes got as big as they could get. Resisting the supreme urge to cover herself she waited for his reaction. What the hell are you wearing? He had always thought she was innocent but this. And damn his words didn’t come out like they should have rather they sounded like a breathless gasp.
Despite his words, her confidence hiked up. Because his breathing was fast and there was an instant swell in his pants. All flushed, she slowly sat on his lap and kissed him. This was her last chance, if he rejected her now she wouldn’t be able to muster this courage ever again. Maan held her hands and she panicked thinking he was going to push her. He didn’t. He just held her tighter and tighter, eventually pulling her into him and kissing her back; which was good because she wouldn’t have lasted long in this alone. In a heartbeat his kisses became hungry, fervent, his hands roamed over her body finding bare skin and feeling it up, pressing her form closer to his hard one.
Reclining the chair back more he cupped her head titling her face to kiss her deeper. Why did you wear this? He asked making her sit straight and staring at her with his piercing gaze. *Aapko… seduce karne k lie.* She told way too honestly. And why would you do that? *Because I want you and I want you to want me.* He cupped her breasts and started to kiss her neck, she titled her head back to give him more space. I have always wanted you. That made heat rise and pool low in her stomach. She squirmed uncomfortably and Maan moaned pulling her back over him now biting the plump globes that were spilling out. Her nails bit into his shoulders. Not here. He muttered unable to stop but somehow picking her up and carrying her inside to the bedroom.
In throes of passion she didn’t notice her actions, pulling him down on the bed with her- only aware of one thing that this was what they had wanted for so long. Now it was happening. He felt her up as much as he could and showered million kisses on her neck, cleavage and face and when that wasn’t enough he tried to bare her breasts completely, and succeeded. The cloth gave away with a distant tearing sound freeing her mounts. Geet gasped biting her lip when her keen nipple was taken between his hot lips and sucked warmly. Sensations swamped her body and if she had voice in her throat the whole hotel would have been shaken up by her bellows of ecstasy.
He was quivering with need, need that had had him on the edge for days, months and years. As she lay, ready and wanting he could only picture her consuming his manhood. He felt the first drops of desire leaking and started to fumble with his shirt. She helped him out of it, their torsos met; skin to skin while he kissed her soft, dulcet mouth again n again ripping the rest of her provocative attire. He started to rub his body over her loving the sweet friction the movement created. In his own urgent necessity to kiss, nip and love her he hardly felt her legs fighting with his jeans. He opened the button and pushed the jeans down kicking them off. Her legs appreciated the action feeling his now bare limbs, toeing his calves seductively.
Maan… I love you.
Electrified he tore back nearly falling on the floor. He stood back up, all fervor, urgency gone leaving in its wake horrified silence. Geet didn’t even know what had happened, one moment he loving her and next she lay naked in bed. Emptiness bleed into her, she sat up finding him standing in same room and yet miles apart. He was frantically rubbing his face with distressed hands. Tears ran down her eyes and she knew everything had ended. Somehow she just knew.
Kya kaha tumne?
That brought back the memories of the first time he had told her his name and she had behaved in a similar manner running away. Maan… She whimpered tying the sheet around herself and standing up.
No, after that. What did you say after that?
*I said nothing.*
Tumne kaha. You said you love me. Why?
*Maan, kya ho gaya hai aapko? Mai bol nai sakti… I am mute.*
Maan held his head trying to sort his mind out. He had imagined it; God couldn’t punish him like this. He couldn’t do this to her anymore. I did it. I raped you that night.
She felt only anger. Walking to him she slapped him then shook him hard so he would look at her. *Kyu?* She screamed although no words came out. She pushed him and he stumbled. *Agar aapko mujhse dur rehna hai toh itna ghinauna jhut bolne ki kya zaroorat hai. Mai pagal thi jo baar-baar sochti rahi ke aapke mann me meri lie kuch hai par nahi, mai galat thi, hamesha se… har baar. Ek baar me samjh nai aaya mujhe. Mai nai aaogi aapke paas, kabhi nai…*
Yeh ghinauna jhut nai sach hai. I was that bloody bastard. Tumhara laal dubbatta maine feka tha. Tumhe mai ghaseet ke le gaya tha. Maine tumhara muh band kia, maine- maine hi wo sab kia. Mai tumhe sab bataoga, tumhe yakeen dilaoga ke wo mai tha… wo mai tha.

KHUMAARI- The Nocturnal Beast, PART 18

KHUMAARI

The Nocturnal Beast

This part is actually for Shru di's bday. Although I got late by centuriesOuchOuch. But still if it wasn't for her I wouldn't have updated even nowConfused. I hope that countsTongueLOL Nonetheless, I love u diHug

Part 18
Protection

Her eyes wouldn’t open, as if her lids were glued together. With great difficulty she caused them to cooperate and flutter open. Fluorescent circles danced around her vision before she could focus on anything. For some time her mind was a blank slate devoid of any thoughts or sensations.

A pukey smell like rotten fish and eggs entered her nostrils and bile rose in her parched throat. Hand flying to mouth, dry heaves wreaked her body to settle into hazy consciousness. Bit of wet sludge made its way out, she sagged back against the rocky wall feeling like her gut had been vomited out.
Then she felt something else.
The pain.
Sheer and deep in her left thigh… a sting that had her yelping miserably. Instinctively her fingers probed the spot but there wasn’t any injury, not one that she could see, but it hurt so much. Staring around in bewilderment she tried to figure out where she was. The dingy, dark place was moist n reeked bad nothing like the warm, bright room where she had woken up every morning since the time she could remember.
Slowly, steadily, drops of water kept crashing onto some unknown spot, the noise of it loud and maddening. Tip-top. Tip-top. Her head snapped in the direction where a squeaky sound came from.
Hands clasped to ears to block the sounds and eyes shut tight; she pulled her knees closer rocking back and forth. After a period of misery, visions began to play in the hidden crevices of her head, lucent yet spine-tingling. She held onto them. A young girl played in green fields, a man-big and brawny-bounding joyously, trying to catch her. Their laughter filled the fields as well as her mind. They turned around big, happy grins on their faces waving hands in air calling for her to join them. She started to walk towards them.
The door opened with rasp.
Despite her fierce mental attempts to not let them go the images began to flicker, evaporating in no time. She pressed her palm to forehead probing her mind to go back to that place again. Back to that young girl and man.
I have brought you food. A voice cooed. It belonged to the person who had entered the room scaring her lovely imaginary. From the sweet, thin voice and silhouette in dark she guessed it was a female.
She came and sat beside her, soundlessly placing an unshapely plate full of food and a crippled glass of water on ground. My name’s Sheen.
Not interested in knowing the name of an intruder she turned her head away. When the next time Sheen spoke her words were hesitant. Why don’t you… eat this?
I don’t want to eat. She twisted her lips shifting away like a stubborn child. I have been told to not take anything from strangers.
Oh, really? And who would give you such an advice?
Her cheeks burned. ‘I am your mate.’ Those words ringed in her ears. He uttered them every day when she woke up looking at him confused. He never got pissed and or lost the tenderness that his face held while he spoke those four words which were followed by a sweet brush of his lips over hers. My mate. I live with him in his house.
I see. It’s only right to heed him. But if you told me your name as I have told you mine we won’t be strangers anymore. I know you are hungry and I don’t want to scare you but there is no certainty when next you’ll have something to eat. As it is, I have not told my mate that I am bringing food for you, god forbid, if he found out he won’t be too pleased.
Why would you do that for me? She covered her mouth in amazement. This female whom she had never met-without knowledge of her mate-had brought food for her well aware that she might get in trouble for the same. Thank you.
If anything you shouldn’t thank me. This is the least I can do for you. Red hair fell over Sheen’s shoulder shielding her lowered face. She tucked them behind her ears and raised her head giving a faint smile. So, what is your name?
After a second’s thought she came up with. Chhavi.
That’s really a sweet name, Chhavi.
She blushed and stared at the food, her stomach grumbled. Sheen smiled and pushed the plate towards her. Go on.
Chhavi ate with vigor, she actually was famished. She grinned at Sheen once done, wiping off the beads of water that had stuck above her lips. You look sad? She said cocking her head. Surely those were tears in the female’s eyes. She kept her hand on Sheen’s genuinely concerned. Is something wrong?
No it’s… nothing. Sheen blinked and Chhavi smiled.
Yeah. The yucky smell is eye-burning. She made a face.
Feet shuffled outside their room. Hurriedly, Sheen collected the plate and glass from the soggy ground. I have to leave.
That made her panicky. No, don’t go. This place’s scary. There was something in that corner. She pointed to show.
No I can’t stay. The door opened behind them. I’ll come back I promise. To assure her Sheen attempted a smile but it wasn’t reflected back. Chhavi’s heart was beating fast. It was the man from whom she couldn’t take her eyes off in fear that he would chose that moment to strike. He was of average height, thin, with shaggy hairs appearing like they hadn’t touched a comb since last year. His clothes were dirty and tattered and he was most comfortable in them. But all that wasn’t really the scary part. His eyes-lit with naked hunger-was what could be called terrifying about him.
Warming up to the enemy, uh? His voice was just like him, tinny and creepy.
Chhavi saw Sheen walking to the man; her strides were small and stiff. If she could, she would have warned Sheen to not go near that man however she was too scared to speak.
She looks juicy I must say. Maybe I would also befriend her before devouring that delicious body. Who knows it might get me some additional favors. He eyes came and rested on Chhavi licking her body in a languid hiss of terror that she had never experienced before. As his mutilated lips pulled back in show of yellowed teeth, she ducked her head between her knees, wishing the darkness to swallow her so he would move his eyes away.
Somebody snarled. Collecting all her might, Chhavi peeked to see what was happening. It was Sheen who had made that warning sound, even the guy looked surprised. Chhavi eyes bulged out when Sheen neared the creepy guy and said something to him in a whisper.
Whatever she had said wasn’t friendly because his face contorted in an ugly manner. You bitch.
If Sheen was insulted she didn’t show as though it was usual business. Without another word or glance she walked off. Muttering some profane words the guy closed the door.
Everything quieted down apart from the dripping water which didn’t bother her as much as it did earlier. Resting her head back, Chavvi felt her heart rate decreasing. Only problem was the dark, she wasn’t very fond of it. Her thigh still stung and a corner of her heart weighed heavy, she clutched the spot and closed her eyes. To her mind’s shadows she was used to. Although it was never dark outside, there was always a man, her mate, to enlighten everything.
She had always known he too would leave her someday.
Not wanting to think about him anymore she went back to that man and girl of her imagination. No matter many how people came and left, these two would never abandon her. She had them trapped in her mind.
Sun had started it’s descend down when Geet had left the Den with the three Weres. Now completely swallowed by horizon; last glow of the giant ball was overtaken by night’s flare. On the uneven trail their car bounced like a heavy ping pong ball unable to free itself from the ground. Every now and then it jerked riding over some colossal hole in ground and curses flew out of Rudra’s mouth.
He sat in front with Garv while she was seated in the rear of the surprising small car with Maan.
Her hand remained in his tender yet firm grip like he was afraid she would jump out next second and take off. Caressing his rough skin she tried to reassure him, his eyes snapped to hers, thick lashes rising to reveal big, black orbs. He was so beautiful in all his masculine magnificence. His actions were somehow far more charming though she thought as he took her hand to his lips kissing the back and then rubbing his cheek over it. Awwee… he was so cute but she won’t say it in front of his father and bro or he would kill her.
Maan was on the edge from the moment when Rudra had said Geet had to go with them to Kaya who apparently was a witch. She didn’t know why Maan was so unnerved when he was going with her. She was actually a bit nervous herself, although, she had no doubts that he would protect her from any harm. Keeping her free hand on his thigh she squeezed. If 4 weeks ago somebody had told her that she would behave like this in future she would have scoffed and laughed at them but now sitting here it felt like this side was always a part of her just that she had never known about it.
God, she was losing it completely.
He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. She tried to hold back a stupid grin but failed.
Your smile does something to me? He whispered in her ear, tickling it with his warm breath.
She blushed. What something?
I’ll tell you tonight.
Now that was a dangerous promise, one that made thrill and excitement roll inside her.
After Karthik and Maan’s X-mate-to-be had left, she had a long conversation with Maan. Geet was upset, uncharacteristically. She shouldn’t have been but she was, and there was no use denying it. Regardless to say, it was all Maan’s fault. He should have told her about Lovina so that when his ex appeared she wouldn’t be so clueless and unprepared.
There was nothing to tell. He had said at her very vocal displeasure.
Someone was promised to you Maan. Without me in the picture she would be in my place.
Don’t tell me you are feeling bad for her.
Yes, she did. But the feeling was limited to just that. She felt bad like she would feel for a reality show contestant who didn’t win the prize money. Nowhere this little empathy was compared to the primal emotions which claimed that no one else-NO ONE ELSE-but she was the right companion for Maan. He was hers n only hers.
How I feel is irrelevant. What matters is that you hid the truth. You… she poked a finger against his chest. Said that mates don’t lie to each other.
Excuse me, I lied? You have to be crazy.
Now I am crazy. She stomped her foot idiotically. Of course you would say that now since your TRUE mate was here for you.
You are my mate. She took a step back a bit stunned by his fervent reminder. His eyes softened the next second and he pushed her down to sit on the couch. Kneeling before her on the floor he cupped her face in his big palms.
You know, even I if couldn’t smell and sense your distress, I would have known how you feel. Your face is too transparent.
She was offended but bit back a retort as he studied her eyes like they would confide in him all secrets of the universe.
I know me not telling isn’t what’s bothering you to the extent you are exhibiting. It’s something else, isn’t it?
Why should I tell you? Why should I bare myself only to-
Shh… He pressed an efficient finger to her plump lips. That’s not what I am asking you. I want to know how you feel. It’s not an unfair trade, sugar. In return I will tear myself open for you. But you have to understand that it has to be important for me to bring it up n tell you. Now tell me what is it?
Her hazels were unsure as she spoke. She was going to be your mate. You have been with her for don’t know how long and she belongs to your world unlike me. You were both promised to each other, right? I have no idea what that means. Were you guys romantically involved or if you had ever… slept with her? Her eyes bulged out in horror listening to her own thoughts.
Maan kissed her palms and some of her anger dispersed in thin air. You couldn’t remain angry when this guy didn’t want you to.
We weren’t romantically involved to say the least. We were friends nothing more than that. The alliance was fixed by our fathers when she was born. Lovina is almost as old as she appears so we haven’t been together for that long. Although I would admit that I kind of saw my mate in her when she reached adulthood. She’s of royal linage and is beautiful, perfectly groomed-
I got the idea. Geet grumbled and could tell Maan was having a difficult time holding back his smile.
Yet I didn’t mate with her when I could have as that would mean letting others make decisions for my future and blow up some darn responsibilities over my head. Even if that wouldn’t be the case, I just couldn’t bring myself to sleep with her, she is beautiful and all but at the same time too sensitive and fragile. She is a friend, has grown before my eyes and I couldn’t commit with her without being sure that I was completely ready. And I was never ready, until I met you and realized why the perfect wasn’t so perfect for me.
It was like being hit by bullet, the certainty I felt upon seeing you. Today I regret leaving you that night when we met for the first time. Following two years I had loads of time to repent and burn in agony yet I knew we would meet again and we did. I don’t understand why you feel threatened by some other female. He enquired resting his chin on her lap and staring up at her with genuinely confused expressions.
I am not threatened. She scoffed. Oh, he looked so adorable. Her beast, tamed and soft just for her. I just- she started massaging his thick, slightly curly locks and he buried his face in her lap, groaning. The sound vibrated against her skin reaching forbidden places making them clench with need. I just feel- I don’t know. It’s hard to explain.
Hmm, ‘am listening. His voice came out muffled. He kissed the inside of her thigh over the cloth.
I guess I got a bit insecure. She admitted grudgingly and pouted. It’s new for me, all these feelings. I am sorry I behaved like that.
His head rose up at that and finally he sat beside her. Burying his hand in her hairs he brought her face close to his. If you ask me I think that was too hot… you, standing up to me, pocking my chest fearlessly. No female would do that. And all that anger was for me. Because you thought I was with someone else. That’s makes me feel so special.
She had to be dreaming because there was faint redness on his cheek, that made her want to kiss his cheek. Geet found out that she wasn’t just thinking but actually doing it.
Do that again. He said eagerly. Blushing, she kissed his other cheek.
Again. He breathed. She leaned in to kiss his cheek again. No. In the center.
Their lips had just met when they were interrupted by a knock on the door. Maan was furious and the servant would have been good as dead if it wasn’t for Rudra who was calling them downstairs.
Maan’s dad cursed again breaking her thoughts. These humans are good for nothing and so are their unreliable inventions. Put these things on a little test with the wilderness and they will show you their real face.
Dad… Garv reproached and Rudra seemed to recall that there was human sitting with them in the same unreliable invention.
I didn’t mean to offend you, dear. Rudra said narrowing his eyes in sincere apology.
Its okay, Mr. Khurana. You don’t have to watch your tongue every time with me. You can curse humans; I’ll live through it somehow. Geet teased.
Rudra scratched the back of his head sheepishly and Geet noticed not just Maan but his father was equally adorable.
Maan pulled her into him and she rested her head on his shoulder. While his hand moved up and down on her arm, she sighed dreamily looking into his deep, black eyes. He didn’t like her attention wandering to anyone else even for a few seconds.
Maan…?
Yes, sugar.
That cutesy nick name again. She would enquire why he called her that, although not now, she didn’t want to get distracted before she could ask one very important thing. Why would your parents decide a mate for you when werewolves’ mates are predetermined by fate?
You always don’t get to find your predestined mate. It’s rare fortune now. Since start our mates were already decided by the forces of the sky but then there were only few packs and they were all closely located and finding your mate wasn’t so hard. With time, packs dispersed around the world due to various reasons- search of food, shielding our existence. Mostly Weres don’t step out of the pack spending their entire life in the area where their pack dwells. Royals do go out because they have to but other than that we are very private creatures and don’t like to go away from home so predestined mates meeting is not common anymore.
Then what do you do?
Garv spoke glancing at her in the mirror while driving. Not meeting our predestines doesn’t mean there aren’t others we can fall for. If someone is the one for us we take them as mate like humans do, it’s just not that slow. We are faster, sometimes one glance is enough and sometimes a few hours of togetherness, just both the Weres have to be adults. Our mate-detecting senses develop only once we reach adulthood.
And what if you meet your predestined after mating with someone else? That would surely cause some serious problems.
Nah-uh. A Were takes only one mate in his or her life time. Once we mate someone else, the connection with our predestined is severed. We wouldn’t even recognize them when and if we ever meet.
So if Maan had chosen Lovina before meeting me then he wouldn’t have…She trailed off looking back at Maan.
He nuzzled her neck kissing his mark making her blood sizzle. I didn’t chose Lovina and would never have, n not just her but nobody else would have been able to take my heart. Only you are the one.
His heart… she had his heart? He had never confessed that. She felt like the luckiest girl on the planet. Not just the planet but the entire universe, even aliens would envy her. From the corner of her eyes she saw Rudra smiling in the mirror trying to pretend that there wasn’t a mushy-gooey moment going on in the back seat and Grav had a weird look on his face which she couldn’t discern.
From far only the lit houses were visible, their glow dim but unmistakable.
What’s that? Geet asked.
Witches’ abode. Garv answered because his brother was too busy playing with his mate’s hairs and kissing her. She was trying to resist him for the sake of two people in the same car but Garv could tell she liked it as much as his brother did.
It was sickening to see them like that because he could never have it. Also, he couldn’t bring himself to trust the human completely. Out of the entire world, Maan was the last person he had ever imagined to behave so love struck that too with a human but seeing their affection blossom made a deep gash ache inside him.
Parking the car in front of the witches’ houses, Garv gave a honk to inform them of their arrival. As if they wouldn’t already know about them coming. Still, they treasured their privacy just as the werewolves did, so giving them a signal was for better.
Rudra and Maan stepped out of the car. Geet, though, was restrained. As she stuck her head out, Maan pushed her back inside.
What the hell? She shrieked. Maan sniffed the air and observed their surrounding for any signs of danger which was the right thing to do as the witches lived good distance away from where the werewolves resided. In the same territory but as further apart so as they didn’t have to cross each other’s path. Considering what was happening lately it was better to be safe than sorry.
Once sure that there wasn’t anything that would harm his beloved mate, Maan let her out. She glared at him with puffed up cheeks and Garv almost gasped when she slapped his arm. Nobody dared to touch Maan, slapping him was a farfetched thought. To his utter disbelief, Maan just smirked not minding at all. Instead, he laced his fingers with hers. Let’s save the spanking for bedroom, okay?
Geet’s whole face flushed, she still didn’t let go of the anger-a pretense-lamely scoffing at Maan’s idea.
How is this place alight when there are no light sources? She asked bewildered, staring at the three houses ahead.
They looked like modern huts, standing in middle of a small clearing, all the three structures were identical- made of wood and appearing ancient yet stalwart to stand against roughest of perils. The triplets glared at the night with white light that lit up the verandas without any bulbs or lanterns.
Magic, obviously. Maan spoke.
As they climbed the steps of the middle house, Garv’s heart thudded fast. There was a reason he had readily volunteered to come along and he wished to get to see that reason.
A thin, short witch conservatively wrapped in a cloak opened the door without them knocking. These witches were creepy as hell, they knew everything, Garv thought anxiously.
Welcome. She bowed and smiled nervously.
They were ushered inside the living room which was decorated with antiques and jars on shelves that nobody would want to know the contents inside. Garv had once or twice visited the place and there was a scent mixed in air that made just standing inside the house very soothing. He guessed it the mild scent was of simple cinnamon that permeated the air or it could be a chant or something to partly intoxicate the visitors so they wouldn’t try to be naughty. Or maybe, he was just being overly anxious for no reason.
Maan was equally nerved, unlike their father who seemed perfectly at ease. Geet was scrutinizing the area with curious gaze flying about all over the room.
Greetings, sire. Kaya said bowing to Rudra in a similar kind of clock. She was the eldest witch, nobody knew how old she really was and she didn’t reveal it either by any means, always carrying herself with elegance and dignity. In her young days she must be hell sexy not like she came across very old even now.
She bowed before Maan next then Garv and in the end, after a pause, in front of Geet. The new addition to the family in form of a human just like we had heard. You are heartily welcomed into our little abode, my lady.
Not knowing how to respond, Geet gave a little bow herself. Thank you.
Females or males of any kind never did that. Witches were below Werewolves because the Weres gave them protection and a place to live. They were to serve. While humans loathed them completely so there was no question of giving them respect.
The little gesture of reverence pleased Kaya to extreme degree because she smiled openly. To see such an emotion on her face was unusual because all she ever did was to give a tight lift of lips in lieu of a smile. A humble personality behind a beautiful face. You are indeed a lucky male for her own self is unknown to her. She told Maan.
There she goes with the incomprehensible insinuations. Garv rolled his eyes.
Maan’s chest puffed up as he tucked his ‘humble-beautiful-mate’ into him proudly. Geet blushed and Garv wondered if she suffered from split personality. They settled down and he looked around for what he had come for, luck wasn’t on his side because he not as much as got a glimpse.
Oh, I see. Kaya said once Rudra explained the situation relating to the recent attack at Vidhuat’s place and Chhavi’s apparent abduction. I would have known if somebody had trespassed through the shield.
The Werewolf territory was encompassed by an invisible shield that the witches had erected with their powers. Any unwanted guest who didn’t belong to the werewolf pack or the witches couldn’t breech their territory even by mistake without the witches instantly knowing and the message being passed to the Weres in no time.
Only a person from your clan and my eleven witches can come n go freely. And them not having any scent is probably a work of concealment spell. I can assure you that none of my witches has helped someone with malicious intent.
That much I am well aware of, Kaya. You don’t have to assure that to me. You have been part of our clan for a long time now for me to mistrust any of you. I have no doubts over your loyalties. Rudra told in his effectual tone.
But it is done by a witch. Maan spoke. If a witch can erect a shield then another can weaken or dysfunction it too.
I am afraid not. It’s actually not a violent magic to stop or restrain and rather a revealing one. A plus of such magic is though they are not much powerful; they can only be eradicated by the ones who have made them.
That makes no sense.
I suppose it doesn’t. Will you please ask your mate to not touch anything there?
Geet had made her way to shelves with jars. She stepped back at Kaya’s censorship. I am sorry.
She was just looking. Maan jumped into her defense.
Err, if you don’t mind can I know what’s there in them? Geet asked with big hopeful eyes.
Ingredients for spells and potions.
Like?
Wild flowers, herbs, bat wings, snake venom.
Geet made a face. So how do you it? Put everything in a giant vessel, chant spells or the spells are prepared some other way? Only witch can do it? Can’t I learn them too?
Maan rubbed his forehead irritably because Geet wasn’t looking at him to see his glare. Is she always this… Snooping? Nosy? interested?
Yeah, she has a knack for asking questions. Maan said finally able to pass Geet a firm glare which lost its intensity as she looked at him with a pout.
While Rudra, Maan and Kaya got tangled in another conundrum of ‘whos’ and ‘hows’, Garv discreetly crept out of the room into a narrow passageway which was mostly dark and held more shelves against the walls on both sides cramped with spell books and jars. At the end of the passage was a door and a part of him knew that his destination lay there. His wolf growled just as he set foot inside the room. An insane wave of excitement nearly had him stumbling. He could recognize her even when her face was not turned towards him; she was under a sole ray of light illuminating her tall, slender figure. Her silken, black hairs were straight, hanging past her hips.
He had an overwhelming urge to run his hands through them, to trace the enticing contours of her body. And he did.
I told you it’s not here- Her words died in her mouth when she felt an undeniable male touch on her back through her hairs. Heavy breathes licked her skin. She turned around with a jerk. Witches had no smell, until you took a whiff up close. Her scent was just like the last time, delicious and minty. It made his body tingle in ways that would scare her if she came to know about them.
Hi… He smiled to calm her nerves and his as well. Don’t know why he seemed to terrify her because she stared at him like he was some ghost.
Gulping she opened her mouth although words failed her and she kept looking at him with expressions that had his wolf flinching dejectedly.
You…you… shouldn’t be here.
When she tried to flee he blocked her exit cornering her against a wall and shelf. She was breathing so fast he could hear each intake and release.
How is your leg?
It’s fine. She said in a small squeal. What exactly does she think of him?
He titled her face up. Her skin tone was on the darker side just like Kaya’s but each inch of her was smooth and buttery. Her features were sharp from eyes to lips; she could be a painting of Picasso for all he knew. Standing here with her almond-shaped, black eyes staring into him he realized why they were called witches because they were born to bewitch.
He traced her lip wanting nothing in world but just to kiss her once. He could see the desire swirling in her eyes. He felt her hands on his. No more did he wait taking her lips into his. Mother would kill me. She said giving him just a brief taste. Please leave. His mind was fogged.
Only if you would promise to come by the river tomorrow morning.
No. I can’t.
Yes you can.
He knew he was acting pushy. However considering his wolf’s plan for her were more than what one would call pushy. So this was all she could bargain for. One thing was for sure, though, he would have her. His wolf wouldn’t rest in peace until he had her spreading those long legs to engulf him in her heat.
A small thud had their eye lock breaking. What are you doing here?
I was just taking a stroll. Geet said.
The witch shrugged out of the corner. Before she could leave Garv grabbed her hand.I’ll be waiting for you. He let go and she scurried away.
What’s that?
Geet picked up the book pushing it into her jacket. A book. Duh!
You are stealing?
What, no. I am just borrowing.
I don’t care as long as you don’t get us trouble.
It’s better if you don’t talk about trouble.
Geet had to admit the girl, witch, was gorgeous. No wonder, Garv was smitten by her but she did look kind of scared. Happened, when a werewolf showed interest in you. They weren’t very comforting.
Where were the two of you? Maan asked as soon as Geet and Garv came back.
Looking around. Geet told. You have a nice home here, it would look better if you would keep it more illuminated.
Maan coughed and she gave him a ‘what is your problem look’. He had problem with everything. And yet he had defended her earlier instantly when Kaya had scolded her. She was just looking, it wasn’t a big deal. Not every day you came to meet a witch.
So when can we do it? Rudra was asking.
Do what? Geet wondered. She had missed a good amount of conversation in her fascination with the books and secret contents of the jars.
End of next month, there is going to be a blue moon. A perfect day for the union. Have you taken her?
Not yet. Maan said.
No, they couldn’t be talking about what she was thought they were talking about.
Kaya nodded. The official mating ritual can be done on the night of blue moon. It’s most auspicious for your kind, one that would mark a perfect union.
Mating ritual? Geet almost had a heart attack. That was why Rudra had brought her along.
Maan looked at her lovingly and she had never seen such blatant happiness on his face. He grinned at her and she faintly smiled back. She wouldn’t throw a rash fit about it. She would be rational and talk to Maan calmly.
They started to leave. At the front door, Kaya held Geet’s hand and for a moment Geet thought she had been caught for taking the book. My lady, be ready for the change. She whispered in her ear before shutting the door on her face.
A chill ran up Geet’s spine. What was that supposed to mean.
What happened? Maan jogged back up the steps to take her with him because she was standing immobile on the porch.
Nothing. She held his hand in a tight grasp.
He kissed her forehead. It might be too fast for you but don’t be afraid because I am here. He dragged her to the car and she let him.
